Inspiration
As i travel the country with the mission against bullying i meet a lot of people. Teachers, social workers, law enforcement and many, many students, children of all ages, sizes,
backgrounds, with full or lesser abilities.
It is a blessing that I get to see so many different people and with such great variety.
Last week I had to go to a city called Tilburg, to a school with kids with autism, some had other mental and/or physical disabilities. Beforehand I was told that many of them just like to play PlayStation and other game devices and that gym was not their favourite pass time.
Right away I thought it would be a nice challenge for me to get these kids interested in the sport that saved my life, basketball. As I told them my story of being bullied in school I saw some kids lighten up. This man didn’t come here to be cool or tough. Mister Pieterse came here to connect and see if he could take them on a ride thru his joy and passion for this game. They accepted it and we had a great day with three super hard working groups.
But this is not why I wrote this piece because even at this stage of my life I still get inspired by many others and this day it happened again.
During the second workshop there was one young man that did not participate as he sat on the side rocking his upper body back and forward but with a big grin on his face. I saw a teacher next to him holding a white stick with some stripes so I realized right away this young fellow was blind.
He smiled big time when I was telling some jokes and became more serious at other times during the workshop. He was clearly into it and enjoyed every minute of it.
It was time for lunch as the organizing teacher showed me the way to their cafeteria where I sat down with some soup and a sandwich. I was talking to some teachers about the morning we just finished as a young man across another table turned half around and spoke up.
You are from Amsterdam, he said, I really enjoyed the workshop and the style of humour. As I looked up from my soup I saw it was the blind youngster that had
spoken. ‘I have come to watch you give the workshop’ he said. He said ‘watch’ and I believe him because he saw more than many other children I have given this lesson as he explained exactly what he felt and understood.
I looked him into his eyes and the two white dots that never saw any daylight became sparkles, as I saw his joy for school . After we talked about some things we went on to eat our lunches as I turned to the teacher that brought me in for this day. I asked him if this kid wasn’t a little older than the others. The teacher replied that this young man was a student-teacher and his big dream was to become one himself, some day.
As we returned to the gym for the final workshop, I looked in the corner of the floor and there he sat again, now on his own.
I asked him his name and if he wanted to join us. I made him shoot at the basket with all the children helping for him to make one. He succeeded and the joy it brought not just him but all the children was priceless. Later that workshop I did a little sound quiz, with music pieces that everybody had to guess. He knew almost everything I played, great.
Mos, the blind young man, gave me great inspiration and I know for sure he will be a great teacher one day.
